Book AppointmentWhat Is Dry Eye Disease?
Dry eye is a chronic condition. It’s when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right quality of tears. It’s often triggered by aging, hormonal changes, and certain environmental factors like a dry climate or overuse of air conditioning.
Some medical conditions can also cause dry eye, including diabetes, Sjögren’s syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Dry Eye Is More than Feeling Dry
Dry eyes, watery eyes, and tired eyes are all symptoms that can affect you when your eye’s surface lacks a consistent, quality layer of moisture. Other common symptoms of dry eye include:
- Blurry vision
- A feeling like something gritty or sandy is stuck in the eye
- Redness
- Light sensitivity
- Stringy mucus near your eye
- Scratchy, stinging, or burning sensations
We Treat Your Dry Eyes Personally
Your eyes are truly one of a kind—as unique as your fingerprint. That’s why our approach considers your personal needs. At Maple Valley Eye Care Center, we offer personalized strategies and a range of dry eye treatment options to cater to your specific needs.
We can prescribe eye drops with active ingredients, recommend quality omega-3 supplements, and offer advice on eye nutrition.
We also provide in-office treatments like IPL, BlephEx, and meibomian gland expression. By improving the health of your meibomian glands (the eyelid glands that release natural oils), we can help stop your tears from evaporating too quickly.
IPL Therapy
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a treatment that uses gentle light pulses to target inflammation around the eyes. Your cells soak up the light energy, which generates heat. This heat helps break down and melt oils trapped in your eyelid glands. IPL can also help reduce inflammation, like the redness and irritation caused by rosacea.
Conveniently, there’s typically no downtime needed after IPL treatments. You can schedule a quick “lunchtime” treatment and get right back to your day.
BlephEx
Your meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of your tears, are located around the rim of your eyelids. Excess bacteria and debris can block these glands or cause inflammation, preventing quality oil production. BlephEx is an in-office procedure that helps exfoliate and clean your eyelids and lashes.
The procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes and is usually repeated every 4–6 months, so you can keep those eyelids and lashes feeling clean and your eyes feeling refreshed.
